Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best way to reach you?
  • Send in a note with your child and I will get back with you the same day
  • Email me at robin.swift@owensborocatholic.org (sometimes I can not check my email until late afternoon so if it is urgent send a note with your child)
2.  What do we need to know about AR (Accelerated Reading)?
  • AR is a reading program that starts in first grade
  • Students read a book (there are different books at different levels}
  • Students take a computerized test based on the book that they read
  • Students receive points based on how many questions they answered correctly
  • I have many AR books in the classroom library, but the the public library has AR books too that the kids can take tests on (they keep a K-3 AR list there too!)
  • Students catch on very quickly to AR tests and they will ALL get points each quarter! :)
3.  What is the birthday treat policy?

  • No birthday parties are permitted at the K-3 Campus. Due to the increase in food allergies, and in order to ensure the safety of all students absolutely NO food may be brought in for a child’s birthday. Birthday invitations are not to be brought to school and distributed unless all members of the same gender in the classroom are invited.

    All snacks brought to school, must be individually wrapped OR in an individual baggie. Students MAY NOT bring in snacks for anyone other than themselves. In order to protect all children with food allergies, we ask that parents refer to the www.snacksafely.com website to find nutritional and safe snacks. Please do NOT send in snacks with peanut butter or peanuts in them.

4.  How much homework will my child have every night?

  • Homework usually consists of studying spelling words and reading a leveled reader from reading group. Practicing addition and subtraction math facts is very important too! Remember practice makes permanent! :-)
  • Reading is a VERY important skill in first grade, so please practice reading with your child every night.  Take turns letting your child read to you, you read to them, and read together. Make it fun! Reading involves more than just books.  Have your child read menu's at restaurants, street signs, etc.
